Evicted From Their House Transgender Refugees Cry Out For Help

As I write this, eight (8) Transgender Refugees were evicted from their house and some slept in an unfinished house while others went to a friend who has a very small room to seek shelter. 2 of these are very ill and some are on medication. The problem with sleeping in an unfinished house, is that they are trespassing and this punishable. The problem with sleeping in an overcrowded space is that it is unhygienic and affects one’s full enjoyment and expression of privacy.

The troubles of these Transgender refugees have come in droves. When this writer asked three members of the Trans Organization Movement about their life in Kenya, general life and housing situation this is what they had to say:

Roiko (not real name) says:

“When I came to Kenya, I expected to find support as a refugee. I did go to register but I didn’t have it in my mind that there are many issues that affect the way I express myself. I was chased out of a house of the friends who first hosted me because they claimed I am so much of a girl. They also said they are scared the neighbours and community members were complaining about my way of walking, facial and general appearance. I left the place and sought other friends who understood a Transgender Person. I found out that we Transgender face discrimination even within the LGBTIQQ Community.  We made a decision to form the Trans Organization Movement (TOM). We had our headquarters in a 5 meter by 10 meter room. This is the house of one of our members. We looked for friends who could support us as an organization as well as as provide us money to get another house. We got the house and paid the rent. However, we have been kicked out because ‘we are like girls.’ The Landlady said that the community complained about us and that they will burn down the house. So, we were evicted. We are now homeless.”

Rachael:

“I feel (sobbing) so bad. We are human beings too. We formed our organization as a support community. We wanted to be recognized as a team of people who can contribute to society. But, all we get (sob) is being ridiculed, ostracized, kicked out, abused and we restricted our movement. We only move out of the house during day. Now, we have been (sob) kicked out of our house. We wrote letters of appeal to organizations which support LGBTIQQ but we have not heard from any. I am appealing (sob) to organizations concerned to help us.  We need housing, bedding and food please.”

Group:

“We appeal to all who support Transgender Persons to come to our aid. We kindly ask to be provided funding to pay for housing/shelter, bedding and food for 8 Transgender persons. Thank you so much.”
